Ayurvedic treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) - All you need to know

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects your nervous system. It happens when your immune system attacks the myelin that protects the nerve fibers in your body.

Multiple Sclerosis

There are treatments in Ayurveda for MS. You will need to be in the hospital for 21-90 days for the treatment. The time will be as per the stage of the disease and your overall health.

Multiple Sclerosis comes from the phrase "scars in many places." This illness affects the body's brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Depending on how bad the condition is, nerve damage can become permanent. Getting treatment in time is vital here.

Your signs will depend on the extent of damage to your nerves. It also depends on the nerves that are involved. With treatment, it is possible to ease the symptoms and slow the progress of the illness.

What causes Multiple Sclerosis?

Doctors are yet to find out what causes Multiple Sclerosis. MS is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, presuming they are foreign tissues.

The nerve fibers in both the central and peripheral nervous systems have a layer of myelin around them. It is an insulating layer that surrounds nerve fibers. This layer covers and insulates nerves like those in the brain and spinal cord. Also, they help send electrical signals from the brain to the rest of the body.

MS happens when, for some reason, our immune system targets and kills myelin. Messages to and from the brain will be slow or even stop if the myelin is damaged.

Risk factors for Multiple Sclerosis

A few factors can make the chance of getting Multiple Sclerosis higher.

  • Age: People between 20 and 40 are most likely to get MS.
  • Gender: MS is three times more likely to happen to women than to men.
  • Smoking: People who smoke are more at risk.
  • Infections: Viruses like Epstein-Barr can make you more likely to get the disease.
  • Vitamin D: Low amounts of vitamin D can make you more likely to get MS.
  • Weather: People in countries that are farther from the equator are more likely to have MS.
  • Family: People with first-degree relatives who have MS have a 3–5% chance of getting MS themselves.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Ayurveda and Multiple Sclerosis

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medicine systems in the world. It has been around for thousands of years. There are references to this in ancient Indian texts that date back thousands of years. Ayurveda puts a lot of stress on treating people in a way that is in harmony with nature. So, you will see that most medicines are from natural herbs.

Each of us has three energy forces, or doshas, Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. The Vata dosha is in charge of everything in your body that has to do with movement, like your nervous system. Kapha, on the other hand, is in charge of the body's structure and hydration, while Pitta is in control of metabolism and digestion. In a healthy state, the three doshas are all in the right balance. You will get sick if any of these things are out of order.

Multiple Sclerosis is due to Vata imbalance in your body. As Vata controls circulation, any imbalance will make it hard for your brain and nervous system to get enough blood. Ayurvedic treatment for MS aims to correct this imbalance.

When Agni, the body's digestive fire, isn't working well, toxic chemicals build up in the body. When toxins build up, they block the tiny channels in the body. They stop the flow of body energy and can lead to neuromuscular diseases. If it progresses, there can be permanent damage to nerves and tissues. As the body senses these changes, the immune system starts to respond. It then starts attacking and killing tissues, including myelin.
